effects of divorce

When parents get divorced, it’s not just difficult for them – the effects of divorce are difficult for the whole family; especially their kids. They not only have to deal with the separation of their parents, but they now have to deal with an upheaval of their lives and a complete change in lifestyle and household dynamic.

Many kids may develop resilience from a young age and don’t exhibit any psychological issues. However, they may still be struggling, whether they show you or not.

Common effects of divorce on children and teens include:

  • Academic issues
  • Behavior problems
  • Acting out/Rebelliousness
  • Depression
  • Relationship and intimacy issues
  • Increased stress
  • Anger or resentment towards parents
  • Sleeping difficulties

Parents play an important role in helping their kids and teens navigate their way through the complications of divorce.

Here’s what you can do to help your kids adjust:

  • Support them in everything they do
  • Both parents should be consistent with discipline
  • Speak well of the other parent – never badmouth them
  • Have open, honest communications
  • Maintain routine and schedules
  • Give them lots of love and affection
  • Provide a safe space for them to deal with their emotions

Divorce is tough for kids. They may not understand what is happening, and their entire way of life is changing in what seems to be a negative way. It’s your duty as the parent to help them adjust to the divorce, because although it’s difficult for you, it’s even more difficult for them.
