Reiki comes from the Japanese words Rei and Ki. A translation of the word Rei can be understood as Higher Power or God Wisdom. Ki can be understood as life force energy. Combined we understand Reiki as spiritual guidance of life force energy.
Reiki uses the life force energy to encourage and promote healing, stress reduction and relaxation.

Reiki can be shared through non- touch and touch or laying on of hands in prescribed ways. Trained Reiki practitioners are taught how to use these hand placements which are based on the flow of unseen energy. Fluctuations of life force energy effect our feelings of happiness and health. Energy is thought to flow through the body. When energy is low or stuck, we may be more prone to feeling stressed or sick. Negative feelings or thoughts may start in our mind but can impact our whole body. Reiki practitioners understand that a person can feel healthier and happier when body, mind, and spirit work together. When Universal Life-source energy moves it assists a person in “washing away” the negative feelings and thoughts lodged in the unconscious mind/body. Many Reiki practitioners find energy seems to move where it is needed.
During a Reiki treatment, a person lies fully clothed on a massage table. White Noise or soft music is often played during the treatment. A person may also have an eye mask placed over her eyes to aid in relaxing. People may fall asleep or become deeply relaxed during treatment. A Reiki practitioner will assess the person, noticing where energy may or may not be moving. After receiving Reiki treatments, people report different feelings, including feeling peaceful, rested and restored.
Western medicine is beginning to recognize that energy or frame of mind can influence our day to day life as well as the mind of a person with an acute or chronic illness. A Reiki treatment can assist a person in restoring a normal healthy flow of Ki to resume. Reiki is a non-invasive treatment that does not replace medical treatments but can be used alongside medical treatments. Reiki practitioners work in mental health clinics, hospitals and massage practices.
